Academic Policies

Grading

  • Student progress will be evaluated through written examinations and practical observations. Grades are based on an average of four areas of evaluation: Academics, Clinical Work, Attendance, and Performance.
  • Academic classes are graded on a percentile basis that is converted to a letter grade. Students must maintain a 70% or "C" average or better to be in good academic standing.
  • Clinical work is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Students must receive a passing grade. Failed courses must either be re-taken or the student must seek the assistance of a Spa Luna approved tutor. Either option will be at the expense of the student.
  • Performance is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.

Grade Scale

  • A+ = 95-100%
  • A = 90-94%
  • B+ = 85-89%
  • B = 80-84%
  • C+ = 75-79%
  • C = 70-74%

Attendance

  • Grades are based partially upon attendance, read this area carefully.
  • Students are expected to attend all classes. Tardiness is not acceptable. Student attendance is recorded through the use of time card and a time clock. It is the student's responsibility to punch his or her time card upon arrival and departure. All missed work, whether due to non-attendance or tardiness must be made up to the satisfaction of the instructor. To be valid and credible toward course attendance, the instructor must receive, approve, and file in the student's administrative file all completed make-up work. Missed clinical work not made-up within the time period specified by the instructor will result in a failing grade ("F") for that course.
  • Excused Absences / Late Attendance/ Early Departure from class: Students must give Instructor and Administration Staff notice as soon as possible and before class starts. Student must also contact the instructor (before or after class) for any class they are missing and request make-up work assignments for those classes and a time frame for their completion (1 to 14 days). To be valid and credible towards course attendance the instructor must receive and sign off on all completed make-up work. Failure to comply with excused absence guidelines will result in an unexcused absence.
  • Illness and Emergency Absences: Student must contact school staff and the instructor of the class they are missing as soon as possible and it must be before class begins. Students provide written verification of emergency i.e. doctors note etc. All written verification of emergency must be signed off by instructor to be valid as an Illness/Emergency absence and credible towards course attendance. Failure to comply with emergency absence guidelines will result in an unexcused absence.
  • Unexcused Absences / Late Attendance / Early Departure from class: Student must contact each instructor (as soon as possible, not later than their next class attended) for any class they are missing in part or in full and request make-up work assignments for those classes and a time frame for their completion. Make up work for unexcused absences, late attendance or early departure from class can be as much as twice the amount of time missed and must be done to the satisfaction of instructors. Student having any 3 Unexcused Absences / Late Attendance / Early Departure from class may be placed on academic probation. If the resolution objectives of this probation are not met during the probationary period the student may be dismissed from the course. (See Conditions for Dismissal)
  • Missing more than 10% of any program even with completed make up work will result in an incomplete. Certification of completion with be withheld until the student completes additional make-up work, clinic sessions, private tutoring and/or the retaking of courses missed at the discretion of Spa Luna. The only exception to this policy is a pre-approved leave of absence in writing and signed by the school principal.

Grade Reports

  • Grade reports are provided to students, early to mid-program, followed by an overall report that is provided at the end of the program.
